Types of Pigs
Many pigs are known and used around the world. Some of the most famous are the Duroc, the Hampshire, and the Yorkshire pigs.
The Duroc pig is one of the oldest pigs bred in the U.S, in 1812 in New York and New Jersey. The modern Durocs of today is a mix between the ones from New York and New Jersey. It was named after a man's horse, also called "Red Hogs". In 1883, the Duroc-Jersey Association was formed to promote Red Hogs and was very popular in the 1893 world's fair. They have a thick coat of fur and produce tender meat.
The most common type of pig in the U.S is the Yorkshire pig. They are white with straight ears. It is very strong with lots of meat and low backfat. It was developed in England and there are three types: large, middle, and small. The large type is the most common in America. Robert Bakewell turned the Leicestershire breed into the perfect pig for England, which later formed into the Yorkshire pig today. It was brought to the U.S in the 1830's and became popular in 1940.
The next type of pig is one of the most useful types of pigs in the world, the Hampshire. It is native to Britain and used to be called the "Thin Rind" because of its lean meat. It is used as the sire (male parent) of many crossbreeds. There were many major importations, including Canada's import of 40 carefully chosen pigs, including one that was grand champion of the 1972 Toronto Royal Show and breed champion at the 1975 English Royal Show. They became very popular throughout the world.
Many pigs are important for our lives today. These three have made some of the biggest impacts of pigkind.
